Soon after taking office in 2007, I began to fulfil promises I made to the citizens of Richardson during the campaign.
In June 2007, I began working on a draft amendment to the city charter that would establish Term Limits for City Council members. After I had finished the proposed amendment, I submitted to the other members of the Council. After some negotiating and compromising on everyone’s part, the amendment was added to the November 2007 ballot. The voters of Richardson overwhelmingly passed the measure by a 3 to 1 margin .
Another issue that I focused on was a Cap on Property Tax for Seniors. I proposed the idea of a Tax Cap to the other members but was unable to gain enough support to get it passed. Even though we increased the Senior Tax Exemption from $50,000.00 to $55,000.00 for the 2008-2009 tax year, I will address the proposal again during this years budget meetings.
I’m very proud of my voting record when it comes to spending your tax dollars. I have, and will always vote against allocating money for needless special interest projects.
One of the major points of my campaign was to work to bring businesses to Richardson. I’ve worked with the Chamber of Commerce to attract new retail businesses, new restaurants, and new jobs to our city.
In 2008 alone, we added 28 new restaurants and 15 new retailers.
I’ve been told by members of the Chamber’s staff
that there have been more Grand Opening,
Ground-Breaking and Ribbon-Cutting events in the past two years than in recent history. I’m very proud to be a part of these exciting times.
